EVERY SATURDAY SAHARA LOUNGE HOSTS AFRICA NIGHT, WITH HOUSE BAND ZOUMOUNTCHI LED BY IBRAHIM AMINOU (NATIVE OF NIGER IN WEST AFRICA). LIVE BANDS, FREE BUFFET DINNER, WOODEN DANCE FLOOR, BACKYARD PATIO FOR CONVERSATIONS… GOOD TIMES!
Os Alquimistas has been described as “Boldly crafting new sounds while celebrating ancient rhythmic traditions” by WBEAT! while AGENCIA LA REFORMA-MX reckoned “a new branch in brazilian soul music has sprouted”. The group consists of prolific musicians with a wide range of musical influences and socio-ethnic backgrounds.
Melodies both lyrical and haunting interact with flawless percussive landscapes in a bed of brazilian guitar chords, funky bass lines, electric piano, electronic ambience and berimbaus to create music that is simply irresistible and universal! A river that flows through Samba, Rock, Soul, Reggae, Funk, Afropop, Jazz… A river of music!
Zoumountchi is a 9 piece band complete with horn section and percussion, featuring Ibrahim Aminou on kora, guitar and percussion. The band plays two sets of music, typically one featuring guitar, one featuring kora. Ibrahim is a true entertainer, interacting with the audience, creating dance music you can’t sit still for!
We will also continue the fundraising campaign, asking people coming to Africa Night to donate an extra buck or two for a good cause. Our goal is to raise $3500 help Issiaka, a boy Ibrahim met when he was in Africa this spring. The son of a blind woman, he has been a street kid picking up work where he can. Now his mom has passed away and he is on his own.Very smart and great personality and he and Ibrahim took a shine to each other. He has skin cancer all over his back and is in a lot of discomfort. Babata Hospital in Burkina Faso works with herbal treatments and has offered him a free room if he can find funding to cover the cost of his treatment which would take place over 6 months at a cost of $3,500. (about $600 per month).
