The Spider House 20th Anniversary Party
August 20 @ 2:00 pm - August 21 @ 2:00 am
It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 long years since Conrad Bejarano and John Dorgan transformed an old, historic run-down house into what it is today. After a lot of blood, sweat, tears and tchotchkes, Spider House Cafe and Ballroom has blossomed into a hotspot of art, music and culture. Christened “one of the 10 best destinations in America,” by USA TODAY, “an Austin institution,” by the Washington Post, it’s high time to celebrate the unique haven of art, comraderies and old Austin-style quirk that Spider House is, so we’ve decided to throw a free, high-energy party full of live music and performance as well as summer fun. Here’s what to expect:
Live music from The Octopus Project, who has curated a beloved, capacity-crowd SXSW show here at Spider House for the past two years; dance rock breakout performer Mobley, who was named a “Band to Watch” by the Austin Monthly and will be wrapping up a long tour in support of his new release here at Spider House, and LA’s rock noir duo The Peach Kings, loved by press and Drew Barrymore (she handpicked them for a V Magazine music compilation).
The best of Spider House’s ever popular regular events, like Austin Mic Exchange, Austin Poetry Slam, Monday night comedy and more.
Stages representing Spider House Ballroom’s past and present music; back when The Ballroom was known as The 29th Street Ballroom, it was booked by Jason McNeely and Brian Tweedy, now of Hotel Vegas and Barracuda Austin. So the 29th Street Ballroom Stage will host some of the best of that era’s rollick punk, garage and psych bands.
Spider House is not just a musician’s hangout, its staff is in a large handful of innovative and popular bands, such as The Eastern Sea, Slomo Drags, Orthy, SIP SIP, Magic Rockers of Texas, MCG, Rose Sélavy, Teevee, Loteria and more. And yes, there’s a stage for them too- The Spider House Ballroom Stage.
It’s summer and it’s going to be hot, but you will be able to beat the heat with a large, inflatable water slide, a Tito’s Vodka dunk tank, corn hole, a custom Spider House piñata and other cool summer games. Sponsors Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Captain Morgan and of course Lone Star Beer (Spider House is the #1 Lone Star bar in the entire world) will keep the masses imbibed and lively.
Again, the event is free, all-ages and will be a memorable, rollicking salute to not just Spider House, but to the wonderful community who has embraced it and allowed it to thrive for 20 long years. Thank you.
