Survive Riverside Ride
December 12, 2015 @ 1:00 pm
The Survive Riverside Ride will highlight the urgent need for improvements on this critical corridor. Come out in your finest extreme sports gear to show how dangerous the street is in it’s current configuration. Together, we’ll ride East from Midway Fieldhouse, turn around at Grove St and return to The Buzz Mill for a celebratory (and free!) pint. Rather go it on foot? Take part in our Riverside “obstacle course,” a rugged trek through some of the biggest obstacles to safe walking and biking on Riverside, including “Crossing the street” and “Balancing on narrow sidewalks.”
Riverside Drive is one of Southeast Austin’s busiest streets, but it lacks the bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure needed to protect Austinites from dangerous traffic. This critical East-West corridor runs through dense commercial and residential neighborhoods, but its wide span encourages drivers to regularly drive far above the legal speed limit. The Bike Austin Neighborhood Bike Advocacy Committee is calling for a “Complete Street” with protected bike lanes, traffic calming measures and pedestrian safety improvements on Riverside Drive to reduce lethal speeding, boost local business and improve quality of life along the entire corridor.
