Satyajit Ray’s THE APU TRILOGY Marathon

July 5, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

“One of the great cinematic experiences of my life.” – Martin Scorsese on The Apu Trilogy

On July 5, AFS will host a marathon screening of all three films in Satyajit Ray’s APU TRILOGY. We will also screen the films individually on Tuesdays in July. See that scheduled here: https://www.austinfilm.org/retrospectives-and-themed-series/series-apu-trilogy

Last fall AFS presented THE EYES AND EARS OF BENGAL: SIX CLASSIC FILMS BY SATYAJIT RAY, a series which focused on important, but lesser known works by the Indian director. Now we can show the early promise of his magnificent APU trilogy (PATHER PANCHALI, APARAJITO, and THE WORLD OF APU). In these three films made in the latter half of the 1950s, the life of Apu is traced from childhood innocence (wide-eyed and beloved despite the family poverty) through the education of an adolescent on into the tragedies of adulthood (unexpected marriage, love, loss, and maturity as a loving father). On this trilogy was built the worldwide fame of one of the masters of cinema. Newly restored.
