February 18, 2018 @ 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm - Free

Join us for a day filled with FREE events as we celebrate this historic moment for the Blanton’s permanent collection; the official opening ceremony for monumental building Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin.

12:30pm – Official Public Opening Ceremony

Simone Wicha, our Museum Director, will share opening remarks along with Mayor of Austin Steve Adler, President of The University of Texas at Austin Greg Fenves, and President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation Jack Shear at a special ceremony, followed by a musical performance by the University of Texas at Austin Longhorn Band.

We invite the public to sign the guest books available on the tables directly outside Austin.

2pm – Form into Spirit: Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin – Curator Talk with Carter E. Foster, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs

Ellsworth Kelly’s “Austin” uses forms and motifs explored by the artist over many decades. It was also deeply inspired by his crucial formative early years in France in the 1950s. Our Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs Carter Foster will examine these topics and also delve into the more specific history of the building’s creation, which began in California in the mid-1980s.

3pm – Form into Spirit: Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin – Public Tour

In Form into Spirit: Ellsworth Kelly’s Austinexplore how Austin’s conceptual origins began in the seminal period Kelly spent in France (1948-54) when he immersed himself in the country’s artistic traditions and monuments. See first models and designs for the building’s initial conception in the mid-1980s and explore Austin’s four main motifs: Spectrum, Black and White, Color Grid, and Totem.
