Movies in the Park: Crazy Carl Presented by ACL Music Festival
November 19, 2015 @ 6:15 pm
We’re closing the fall season of our free Movies in the Park series with a special screening of the locally produced documentary CRAZY CARL AND HIS MAN BOOBS featuring an old school Austin party that everyone who hasn’t moved here yet will surely hear about for years to come.
Join us at Wooldridge Square Park just before sunset for a FREE screening of this film co-produced with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Rolling Roadshow and presented by Austin City Limits Music Festival!
Meet Carl himself, and enjoy delicious bites from one of Austin’s favorite food trucks all in one of Austin’s historic parks!
About The Film:
This documentary explains how Austin got it’s groove by telling the story of one particular personality.
Flower spinner. Protestor. Salvation Sandwich seller. Foot fetishist. Perennial city council candidate. Austin’s alter ego. Few has kept Austin weird for as long as Crazy Carl Hickerson. For the past 35 years, this Sixth Street institution has been spinning flowers, flashing his man boobs, and breaking into dance outside of Esther’s Follies.
This 50 minute film examines what Hickerson means to Austin, shows his lasting influence on our local politics and follows his loving relationship to longtime companion Charlotte Ferris. We get to use Carl as a time machine to look back to 1970’s Austin and see the cultural, economic and psychedelic forces that came together to form our city’s magnetic personality.
Most impressively, Carl is still out there, every weekend, spinning his flower. Go see a show at Esther’s Follies and see this piece of authentic Austin before it spins away.
