Clifford Antone’s Birthday Celebration Benefiting HOME
October 27 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm - $15 – $20
You’re invited to celebrate the birthday of Clifford Antone at Antone’s—featuring music by Marcia Ball, Carolyn Wonderland, Shelley King, Tracy Nelson, Sarah Brown and many others. Proceeds from the celebration will benefit the nonprofit HOME (Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers). Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15–$20 and can be purchased online.
Clifford Antone’s passion for Chicago blues led him to open the legendary live blues club, Antone’s, in Austin in 1975. Over the years, notable musicians including Pinetop Perkins, B. B. King and Albert Collins have performed at the club, with Clifford’s sister, Susan Antone, serving as their photographer. At the time of Clifford’s passing in 2006, Austin Mayor Will Wynn credited him with being “one of the primary reasons Austin is known as the live music capital of the world.”
In honor of her brother Clifford and his contributions to the Austin music scene, Susan Antone throws a birthday party every year at his namesake club. In addition to celebrating Clifford and the music he loved, festivities often benefit a music-related charity. This year’s beneficiary is HOME, for which Susan serves as an advisory board member. HOME was founded in 2012 by a handful of Austin women, and the nonprofit exists to serve aging musicians in need of housing-related assistance. Many performers who put Austin on the musical map have spent their careers working without a safety net, which has made it difficult for them to cover rent as they age and as the cost of living increases. HOME offers financial support to aging performers, making it possible for them to continue residing in greater Austin and contributing to its music scene.
