Changing the Story Gala

Celebrating a decade of service in the community, the African American Youth Harvest Foundation (AAYHF) proudly announces its’ Changing the Story Gala to recognize Austin changemakers and honor them for their extraordinary work in Central Texas. The Gala will be held at the Omni Austin Southpark Hotel at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016.
This year, the honoree list reads like a “Who’s Who” of Central Texas leaders with a passion for advocacy and dedicated to service for women and children, education and the community. They include First Lady Cecilia Abbott, Austin Independent School District (AISD) Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz, Former AISD Trustee Cheryl Bradley, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton and PeopleFund CEO Gary Lindner. Their tireless efforts to make Austin better for everyone is demonstrative of the very essence of what AAYHF seeks for the community.
Highlighting the event as keynote speaker is nationally recognized culture critic, Dr. Cornel West. West currently serves as Professor Emeritus at Princeton University and has also taught at Yale and Harvard. He’s authored twenty books, including the well-regarded “Race Matters” and “Democracy Matters,” and frequently appears on nationally syndicated television and cable shows such as “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “The Colbert Report,” “Democracy Now,” CNN, C-SPAN.
Changing the Story brings together more than 400 Austin elected officials, community advocates and socially responsible companies to help raise funds to benefit free programs and services to at-risk youth and their families with an end goal of self-sufficiency. Attendees will indulge in a world class dinner and silent auction featuring a signed University of Texas football and basketball by respective Longhorn coaches, Charlie Strong and Shaka Smart.
AAYHF is a nonprofit organization founded by Austin community activist, Michael Lofton in 2006 and serves approximately 8,000 youth and families each year.
