CANCELLED -Colorado San Juan Mountains Hiking and Camping Trip

July 31 @ 7:00 am - August 9 @ 11:00 am

Seven days in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado; wildflowers, cool mountain air, and the smells of conifer forests. Most days will be spent hiking in the Mt Sneffels and Weminuche wilderness areas near Silverton and Ouray. Day hikes are short (3 to 11 miles round trip) but steep (700 to 3,000 feet of elevation gain).

Basecamp is at Molas Lake, consistently rated as one of the most scenic campgrounds in Colorado (http://www.molaslake.com/).
Surrounded on three sides by the San Juan Mountains, it offers convenient restrooms, hot showers ($5), kayak and SUP rentals. Molas Lake is on the Colorado Trail, and a key resupply location for thru-hikers.

MEALS: Hot breakfast is provided and lunch is make-and-take-your-own (with fixings provided). Except for first and last night, dinner meals are taken in town (we provide salad fixings and stoves for people who want to stay in camp).
We are vegetarian friendly. Campers will need to pitch in on some chores (cooking, washing dishes, etc).

TRANSPORTATION: Driving from SW Austin via 15-passenger Chevy Express late model van limited to 11 adults for comfort. From North Austin we are driving a large SUV. The vehicles will leave on Friday 31 July for the eleven hour drive to New Mexico. On the way we will stop halfway in Santa Fe, or Bernalillo NM, at a motel or campground. Motel is at participant expense. The drive to Silverton from New Mexico is around four hours, and very scenic.
The vans will drive back to Austin on Saturday 8 Aug. Depending on drivers, we may stop overnight near Lubbock to stay at motel to avoid all night driving. Arrive back at Austin on 9 Aug.

Flight Option – Fly into Albuquerque International Airport on Saturday 8/1 arriving no later than 8:30 am (I am on Southwest flight (4407/2126) and catch a ride with Diane to Molas Lake Campground, 262 miles and approximately 4.5 hours. Fly out of Albuquerque no earlier than 3:30 pm (2053/2489) on Saturday 8/8. Cost of the rental car and gas will be split between the riders. Maximum capacity is 6 including the driver. Send me an e-mail if you want a ride: [email protected]

HIKES: Our hikes will range from 3-11 miles in length, with 750-3600 feet of elevation gain. We will hike at an average speed of 2-2.5 mph for 6-8 hours a day. In order to comfortably complete the hikes on this trip you should be participating in regular aerobic activity 4-5 days a week for a minimum of 45 minutes. Jogging, bike riding, and using aerobic equipment at a gym are some examples. Additionally, beginning 3-4 months prior to the outing, you should try and complete 2-3 hikes a month, each covering 6-8 miles with at least 1,000 feet of elevation gain. We will schedule training hikes at River Place close to the trip date.
