Austin Regional Spelling Bee
March 25, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm - $10
Austin’s top student spellers compete for this year’s coveted title of Austin’s Best Speller and the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.!
The West Austin Chamber of Commerce and Scripps National Spelling Bee have announced the final participants for the Austin Regional Spelling Bee to be held on Sunday, March 25th, 2018 at the ZACH Topfer Theatre.
47 students have advanced to the regional round from a group of 103 local school spelling bee school winners in a 10 county zone: Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Milam, Travis and Williamson. The 47 advancing students were selected by their scores from an online spelling and vocabulary test administered by Scripps.
Austin Regional Spelling Bee participants and their corresponding school districts are outlined below.
The Austin Regional Spelling Bee will crown one winner who will be guaranteed participation in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC. Austin residents and families will be able to watch this winner live on the ESPN event broadcast in May.
Prior to 2018, winners from this territory had to travel to Houston to participate for a chance to advance to the National Bee. According to the Scripps Foundation, Austin was one of the largest markets without its own bee, and a market that they had been hoping to foster for quite some time. The West Austin Chamber of Commerce took on ownership of the 2018 event from a suggestion from local 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee Co-Champion Nihar Janga.
The Austin Regional Spelling Bee will be open to the public. More details can be found online at: www.austinspellingbee.com
