AFS Presents: WHERE DO WE GO NOW?
February 25, 2016 @ 7:30 pm
DIRECTED BY NADINE LABAKI
France, Lebanon, Egypt and Italy, 2011, 35mm, 110 min
In Arabic, Russian and English with English Subtitles
For centuries the Muslim and Christian inhabitants of a small Lebanese village have lived in relative peace and harmony, but the wars from the outside world have begun causing strife and distrust among the men. Honor elicits retaliation for the slightest effrontery. The cemetery, with a Muslim side and a Christian side, speaks eloquently of the heartache and loss caused by such misguided pride. Using different tactics than the sexual solution found by the women of Aristophane’s Lysistrata – fed up with the warring ways of their men – the women of Labaki’s seriocomedy find a wide array of means to curb their men’s hair-trigger responses to perceived slights and erase the differences precariously dependent on religion. WHERE DO WE GO NOW? has won awards at various international film festivals, including Cannes and Toronto.
