AFS Presents: Newly Restored: THE KING AND THE MOCKINGBIRD (Eng)
September 6, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 6:29 pm
Directed by Paul Grimault
France, 1980, DCP, 83 min., Color, in English
In this stunning hand-drawn animated satire, the ridiculous king of a totalitarian cloud kingdom chases his love interest, a young shepardess, who endeavors to escape with a chimneysweep. Friday screening of the original version is in French with English Subtitles, Sunday’s screening is the English version. Appropriate for families.
In the years following World War II, the animator Paul Grimault and poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert (CHILDREN OF PARADISE) teamed up to adapt a Hans Christian Anderson tale into France’s first ever animated feature film. Grimault’s ingenious artwork and sense of humor paired with Prévert’s poetic social critique made for a completely unique aesthetic. Though the film was wrested from Grimault and released in a cut form, the artist spent the next 30 years getting the rights back and completing the film, which was released in 1979. The film set a new precedent for incorporating advanced artistic concepts in children’s animation, and was an enormous influence on Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who credit THE KING AND THE MOCKINGBIRD as key to the creation of Studio Ghibli (SPIRITED AWAY, HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE), and those influences are palpable in the film.
The film was digitally restored in 2014 and is now theatrically distributed in the United States for the first time.
