The samurai film master Hideo Gosha began to devote his energies to the more commercially viable genre of yakuza (gangster films) in the ‘70s, but by the end of the decade he made this phenomenal, slashing return to peak form. While the life-blood of this film is of course in its action set pieces, it’s also a very well-made and pulpy pastiche of different genres: crime and detection, political intrigue, revenge, and, of course, chanbara (sword fighting). This is an epic, with large themes and a long running time. But it’s also an entertaining, audience-pleasing film with fantastic, bloody action. Massive, colorful and intricately constructed, an underseen masterpiece of its kind. Starring the invaluable Tatsuya Nakadai.
