Bouldin Creek Café, a South Austin staple, is taking a firm stance against the anti-inclusion rhetoric that’s been circulating in the news as of late. On January 20th — Inauguration Day — the restaurant will donate 100% of its profits to organizations that face uncertainty in the wake of a new administration.
A post on the café’s Facebook page says this:
“In order to contribute to the protection of the civil rights, well-being, and safety of marginalized groups in the country, we pledge to donate 100% of our profits on Friday, January 20th, 2017 to the following organizations: the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Planned Parenthood, and Southern Poverty Law Center.”
The announcement comes amid a time when other Austin restaurants are taking a powerful stance against hate —some making an obvious statement against Trump.
According to a story we published at the start of the month, two local restaurants, L’Oca d’Oro and Black Star Co-op, vowed to make their dining rooms into “safe spaces,” or areas where harassment based on immigration status, sexuality, religious affiliation, or ethnicity won’t be tolerated. The stance is part of a nationwide movement within the restaurant industry.
Bouldin Creek Café’s fundraiser takes place one day before the Women’s March on Austin and the Women’s March on Washington. The march, slated for January 21, 2017 at the Texas State Capitol, is expected to attract close to 30,000 individuals.
Whether fellow Austin restaurants will follow in Bouldin Creek Café’s footsteps remains unknown. But for now, it’s a movement we’ll continue to watch.
