Austin has been known for a long time as a healthy city with an abundance of outdoor activities and plenty of healthy places to eat all over town. And now we’re being recognized as one of the top cities for swimming in the whole United States.

A recent study, commissioned by USA Swimming and Speedo, ranked American cities based on collected data, such as the number of fitness swimmers, Olympians living in the city, and the number of swimming pools, swim clubs, and public pools. Where does Austin land on this list? A very respectable fourth in the nation.

For the study, it was noted that there are a high number of USA Swimmers in Austin in addition to its large number of swim clubs. The city also has a big group of fitness swimmers as well as being home to 50 former Olympians. Brendan Hansen, who heads the Austin Aquatics & Sports Academy swim program as well as being a six-time Olympic gold medalist, tells Austin 360, “It’s really great to watch the sport I love become such a huge impact in the community I call home.”

Other cities that made the list are: San Jose and Santa Clara, CA, which topped the list, Ann Arbor, MI, Fort Collins, CO, and Washington, DC. To see the rest of the top cities, go here.
