Austin ISD Improves Upon School Lunch with Diversity and Local Produce

At a time when Austin is becoming more and more of a foodie town, and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is yelling at school districts around the United States about offering more healthy options to students, Austin Independent School District is stepping up to the plate.

As KUT reports, AISD’s new executive chef, Louis Ortiz, is spicing things up with more ethnic food choices and more local fruits and vegetables from local businesses such as Johnson’s Backyard Garden.

All of these changes have included input from students, with the new diverse offerings reflecting the cultural makeup and tastes of these students, nearly one third of whom do not speak English at home.
