September bridges the summer and fall, and we’ve got events to cover both seasons! Jump into a mermaid parade, visit some museums, and head into fall with some fun festivals. You won’t want to miss these FREE September events in Austin!

Texas American Indian Heritage Day Festival

September Block Party

Join in.gredients in welcoming in the fall season and cooler weather. Sit under the new, cool misters or play with the kids on the brand new ship-shaped playground. Batty jr. will be serenading the crowd with their eclectic tunes, and there will be samples from awesome vendors like Boulanger Fermentations, All We Need Farms, Texas Coffee Traders, The Austin Winery, Hemp360, The Flying Tempeh Bros. and more. Additional food and beverages will be available for purchase. 1% of proceeds from the day will go to Workers Defense Project. Show your support for this awesome organization while enjoying some live music, local food, and craft beer.

Home Depot Kids Workshop

You and your child can build a handy pencil case just in time for back to school. Once the pencil box is built, your child can decorate it with paint and stickers. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a certificate of achievement, a workshop apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin. FREE!

H-E-B Free First Sunday at the Bullock Museum

Enjoy FREE exhibition admission all day during H-E-B Free First Sundays, held the first Sunday of every month. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state. Splash Jam (Cedar Park)

Marianne Vitale’s imposing steel sculptures, made from real railroad tracks, look like the last remnants of an ancient people. 10 Year Anniversary at Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center

Celebrate the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center’s 10th Year Anniversary. The festivities start Friday from 6-8:00 p.m. with a gallery opening exhibit with works by Raul Valdez. On Saturday from 3-6:00 p.m. there will be an open house and tours. Later that evening, from 6-10:00 p.m., celebrate in the plaza with live music, dancing, and children’s activities. FREE!

Fit Kids Fest

In celebration of Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, this FREE day-long event provides children and their families with information about healthy eating and activity choices within our community. DogFest Walk ‘N Roll  Austin

Change lives, four paws at a time. This event is family and dog-friendly, so join Canine Companions for Independence for a tail-waggin’ good time! Meet staff, volunteers, puppy raisers, and graduates, and enjoy a short walk ‘n roll, music, food, games, and a lot of puppy love, all while supporting the life changing mission of Canine Companions for Independence in our community. Help continue to enhance the lives of people with disabilities in Texas with a day of fun! While this event is FREE and there is no registration fee, participants are encouraged to set a personal fundraising goal and ask their friends, family, and colleagues to support them with a donation. Every dollar donated to Canine Companions makes a difference and helps fund the mission of providing highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities free of charge. Update: this event has been canceled due to impact from Harvey.

Mermaid Promenade and Mermaid Aqua Faire (San Marcos)

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the downtown parade will feature floats, marchers, music, and “all things San Marcos.” Leading the parade will be Austin Samba and Las Monas de San Antonio bringing their brand of “radical creativity, fantasy and imagination” to the parade with a sizzling combination of rhythm, dance, movement, color, joy and . . . giant mermaid puppets. After the parade, head over to San Marcos Plaza Park for the Mermaid Aqua Faire. The San Marcos River serves as the beautiful backdrop to this fun filled FREE festival that has something for Merfolk of all ages. Listen to live music throughout the day while relaxing at this family fun-filled event.

Austin Canoe and Kayak Demo Days
September 16 & 17   |   Hyde Park Quarries, 11400 N Mo-pac Expy, Austin
Head to the Hyde Park Quarries on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m. and get out on the water to demo over 90 kayaks and stand up paddleboards! There will be informational and fun clinics hosted by the best in the business throughout the day, so pack a lunch and make a day of it. This event is FREE and open to the public, so bring the whole family and be prepared to hit the water.

Lake Travis Cleanup (RSVP)

Join Keep Austin Beautiful, Travis County, and Colorado River Alliance for the biggest scuba diving, on the water, and shoreline cleanup in Texas. Cleanups are followed by a volunteer party featuring FREE lunch, music, and children’s activities. All volunteers receive a FREE t-shirt.

Austin Museum Day

Austin Museum Day is a FREE, city-wide rediscovery of Austin museums held on the penultimate Sunday of the month of September. It provides the public with FREE access to exhibits and activities representing more than 35 Austin cultural institutions.

Uncertain Summer and The Monsters Hiding In Your Closet Book Release Party

Pecan Street Festival

The Pecan Street Festival is a two-day arts festival held twice yearly in downtown Austin’s Sixth Street Historic District. Taking place the first weekend in May and the last weekend in September, the juried festival attracts hundreds of local and national artisans offering original handcrafted creations in a variety of mediums, from metal, wood, fiber, clay, leather, glass and stone to repurposed materials of all kinds. Admission is FREE!

Texas American Indian Heritage Day
September 29   |    Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 N Congress Ave, Austin
The Texas State Legislature has named the last Friday in September as American Indian Heritage Day, which recognizes the historic, cultural, and social contributions American Indian communities and leaders have made to the state. To celebrate this special day, the Bullock Museum will feature a range of activities with dancing and drumming performances and interactive experiences for school groups during the morning, and a FREE public celebration from 6:30-8:00 p.m. that celebrates the traditional and contemporary arts of Texas’s American Indian groups.

Waller Creek Clean Up
September 30 from 10:00 a.m. to noon   |   74 Trinity St, Austin
Join the Waller Creek Conservancy and Generation Waller for a clean-up along Waller Creek to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Register to volunteer here. The cleanup will focus on the southern end of Waller Creek near Lady Bird Lake – The Waller Creek Delta. This area is beautiful with deeper waters, lounging turtles, ducks and herons, and dense vegetation. As the mouth of Waller Creek leading into Lady Bird Lake, this section is particularly vulnerable to litter items floating downstream. Be prepared by wearing close-toed shoes and bringing plenty of water and sun protection – and get ready to develop a new relationship with your urban creek.

2nd Annual Pflugerville Comic Con (Pflugerville)
September 30 from 1-5:30 p.m.   |   Pflugerville Public Library, 1008 Pfluger St W, Pflugerville
Authors, artists, voice actors, cosplayers, and local comic shops will be in attendance for a FREE celebration of comics, anime, and pop culture. Activities include Q&A panels, gaming, comic- and manga-related crafts, and a cosplay contest for all ages. Dragon’s Lair Austin and Rogue’s Gallery Comics Games will be on hand for gaming and presentations. The Austin Toy Museum will have demos and will give a presentation on toy making.

Northside Amplified: The Nightowls

A three-part music series open to the public. Guests will have the opportunity to watch DJ 2DQ spin out on the NORTHSIDE Lawn followed by incredible live music from The Nightowls.
