24 Free Outdoor Movies This Fall

Evenings these days are starting to feel downright enjoyable. You can sit outside without turning into a hot, sweaty mess!  Cooler temps mean outdoor movies can once again be a comfortable experience and – good news – there are a bunch coming up!

We’ve rounded up free outdoor movies happening around Austin this fall, from family-friendly flicks to those better suited to an adult night out.  Pick the movie that best suits you and your crew, grab a blanket, and enjoy a relaxing evening under the stars.

Fall 2014:

The Blues Brothers – Tuesday, September 9 at sunset (around 8 p.m.)
For 21+. Dogs welcome. 

ATX Brands is excited to announce the debut of the Historic Scoot Dive-Inn Theater presented by The Austin Chronicle. The free music themed movie series will begin at Historic Scoot Inn on Tuesday, September 9 with The Blues Brothers. Rated R.

The eight-week series of films includes Almost Famous on September 16, Purple Rain on September 23, The Last Waltz on September 30, The Decline of Western Civilization Part I and II on October 7, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story on October 14, Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny on October 21, and This is Spinal Tap on October 28 where guests are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween-best. Each Tuesday night film will begin at sunset, around 8:00 p.m.

Cazamance, the East Austin venue’s resident food truck, will be serving a special menu with an African twist. Guests will be able to enjoy movies snacks such as chips and dip, nachos, pigs in a blanket, popcorn, and $3 desserts including ice cream floats, brownie sundaes, and s’mores. Additionally, special movie themed cocktails will be available at the bar for purchase.

Raising Arizona – Thursday, September 11 at 8 p.m. 

Movies in the Park is a series of free films brought to you by the Austin Parks Foundation, and presented by the Alamo Drafthouse. Each year, APF and the Drafthouse bring you totally free movies right in downtown Austin at Republic Square Park. Austin residents and visitors bring their blanket or lawn chairs (and often a picnic dinner) for a fun and relaxing evening under the beautiful Austin night sky. 

Raising Arizona is rated PG-13.

Muppets Most Wanted (Cedar Park) – Friday, September 19 at 7:45 p.m. 

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs for a picnic and movie in the park. Concessions will not be available. Rated PG.

Frozen (Pflugerville) – Friday, September 19 at dark.

A special outdoor gathering to see this popular Disney film is sure to be a good time. Join in the fun with the Sing-Along version! Heritage Park is the perfect setting to watch a movie under the Texas sky, eat popcorn, shaved ice and relax. Rated PG.

DV:MC – Saturday, September 20 at 7 p.m. 
Like Star Wars or Halo? If so, come see an Austin-made fan film on Saturday, September 20th. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. Cabo Bob’s on West Campus will be hosting the showing of the film and donating a portion of the evening’s proceeds to charity. Everyone buying dinner will be entered into the raffle. Sponsors will be raffling off great prizes. Come get your picture taken with Halo’s Master Chief, UNSC ODSTs, Star Wars Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, and R2D2.

The Wedding Singer (Round Rock) – Wednesday, September 24 at 8:15 p.m. (dark)

Movies in the Plaza continues with The Wedding Singer at 8:15 p.m. at Main Street Plaza. Rated PG-13. Music by Strangedayz begins at 6 p.m. Bring your lawn chair or blanket. Krave Wine Bar and Bistro will be selling refreshments.

Despicable Me 2 – Saturday, September 27 at dusk

Enjoy an evening of fun at Harper Park. Bring your whole family to lie out on blankets under the night sky! Rated PG.

Disney’s Frozen projected on the big screen under the stars on the Courthouse lawn in Johnson City. Rated PG. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and the kiddos! The event is free.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (Cedar Park) – Friday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. 

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs for a picnic and movie in the park. Concessions will not be available. Rated PG.

Hot Rod Night – Saturday, October 4, from 6 – 10 p.m. 


Every First Saturday of the month is Hot Rod Night at Top Notch. Live music and an old movie on the big screen outside. Bring a chair. BYOB.

Vintage Cartoons for Kids’ Halloween – October 18 at 8ish

Torchy’s Tacos and Alamo Drafthouse have teamed up to bring the Rolling Roadshow to the Torchy’s Trailer in Austin. Free queso if you come in costume. 


Other dates include Evil Dead on October 25 and Hook on November 1.
