Family friendly isn’t the first thing that might come to mind when talking about SXSW but that doesn’t mean its impossible. Finding FREE events to attend isn’t hard to do, finding family friendly SXSW events on the other hand is. So, if you’re a parent who wants to catch some shows but your kid is home for spring break, this one is for you!
Here are ten FREE family friendly things at SXSW
Starting Friday, March, 11 | Various Times | 6th Street
Take the whole family to see the Ignite Your Fire Experience, a never-before-seen, fully immersive photo/video activation. If you’ve ever wondered what you’d look like up on the Jumbotron, now’s your time to find out! C4’s 6th Street takeover which will include a debut of two new activation and sampling spaces. Don’t miss it!
March 11 through 14 | Various Times | Kendra Scott Flagship Store, 1701 S Congress Avenue
The Kendra Scott Flagship store on SoCo is welcoming everyone to join them for exclusive pop-ups, gifts, live music, experiences, drink tastings, and more! No badges required. Find the daily schedule and RSVP here.
Saturday, March 12 | Various Times | The Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Drive
Disney+ is hosting a one day outdoor screening event at the Long Center. They will be showing Jungle Cruise, Cruella, and Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. You can also catch the chance to win giveaways, see characters, and more! Find details and showtimes here.
March 12 through 13 | From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road
Fuel your mind, body, and soul at the festival’s two day wellness expo. Wellness is something everyone should learn more about and what it means to them. This event helps you learn, engage, and explore different categories and areas of wellness.
Sunday, March 13 | From 2 to 5:30 p.m. | Moody Theater, 310 W Willie Nelson Boulevard
eMLS Cup will be hosting a FIFA fans dream come true! Expect to find professional FIFA players (possibly some Austin FC players), enjoy food, drinks, music, on-site activations, free merch, FIFA open play, and more. This is an official SXSW event but is open and free to the public. No badges or wristbands required.
March 13 through 19 | Various Times | Mozart’s Coffee Roasters, 3825 Lake Austin Boulevard
Mozart’s is hosting a FREE week long music showcase. The line up consists of local and touring SXSW artists. In addition to free live music and stunning views of the lake, your “ticket” redeems a week’s worth of 20% of your cafe purchase. Discount is only active during performance hours. Redemption is as simple as showing your proof of reservation at the counter.
March 16 | From 12 to 7 p.m. | GSD&M, 828 W. Sixth Street
Black Fret’s annual day party returns with a slate of awesome performances. It’s FREE, no RSVP is required, and everyone is welcome! Mark your calendars.
March 16 | From 2 to 8 p.m. | Guero’s Taco Bar, 1412 S. Congress Ave.
Have your soup and eat it too. This event is a fundraiser for the Caritas Community Kitchen and Food Pantry. Check out one of the eight live music performances and be sure to tip the band, the money will go to Caritas Community Kitchen. Again, no RSVPs required for this even and all ages are welcome!
March 16 through 20 | Starting at 12 p.m. daily | 1316 S Congress Avenue
For over 21 years Hotel San José has been hosting South By San José for FREE and that’s not changing anytime soon. Located in Hotel San José and Jo’s Coffee shared parking lot, you can enjoy live music, local vendors, and good times. The gates open at noon each day. You won’t want to miss it!
March 16 through 20 | From 12 to 7 p.m. daily | Lucy’s Fried Chicken, 2218 College Avenue
Enjoy five days of live music on the patio at Lucy’s South Congress location. Possibly the tastiest day party of them all. Free and open to the public.
March 17 through the 19 | Gates open at 4 p.m. daily | 800 W. Riverside Drive
The largest stage at SXSW is FREE and open to the public, just like it has always been. You might remember this stage as its previous name, Auditorium Shores. Austinites have always been able to count on this stage to be free and we hope that never changes. You and your family can enjoy three days of live music, set to the beautiful Austin skyline!
12. Flatstock 77
March 17 through 19 | Open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily | Austin Convention Center Exhibit Hall 4 and 5, 500 E Cesar Chavez Street
Flatstock 77 displays posters of varying styles, colors, and techniques for sale by the talented artists who created them. It’s a great opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who created it. Plus there will be live music daily! This event is free and open to the public.
March 19 | From 12 to 2 p.m. | LoLo, 1504 East 6th Street
Celebrate the launch of the Pets & Planet Movement- a coalition of pet parents & brands committed to sustainability. There will be some free drinks, samples, giveaways and more. Dogs are also welcome!
