Youth and Music Vets Come Together For Legacy ATX EP

The next generation of Austin musicians are pushing their way into the spotlight, thanks to a great local nonprofit organization and some high profile mentors. The Music Legacy Project brought together teens from E4 Youth to create music produced by Jonathan “Chaka” Mahone (Riders Against the Storm) in collaboration with members of the Grammy Award winning band Grupo Fantasma.

The project, which kicked off in early March, saw nine Austin-area students who were chosen for their exceptional music skills start down the road to creating and recording their own collaborative EP with Grupo Fantasma under the mentorship of Mahone. The result is a five-track EP titled after the group’s new name: Legacy ATX. The EP download of their work costs just $4.95, so affordable you can buy a digital download for all of your friends.

To highlight the release of the production, the organization will be hosting A Night with E4 Youth on May 19th from 6-9pm. This free event (though donations are always encouraged) will take place on the rooftop of the McGarrah Jessee office at 121 W. 6th St. The Legacy ATX team will be headlining the event with Mahone and members of Grupo Fantasma joining on stage.

You can also see how the work was made and get to know all of the players on the Music Legacy Project’s blog (written by an E4 Youth student, no less). While you’re there, spend some time getting to know E4 Youth and some of their other programs. This local organization does exceptional work that “helps bridge the gap between underserved youth and creative commercial arts careers.” They do this through partnerships with Austin area schools and educators where they “identify, nurture, and promote talent through training, mentoring and internships.”

Good luck trying to not have ALL THE FEELS when you check out this quick video:
