The Paramount Theater in downtown Austin has been a source of entertainment for our city for nearly a century. No, literally. In 2015, the renowned theater will celebrate its 100th birthday. Like a lot of folks about to hit a milestone birthday, however, they're starting their celebrating a little early. A whole year early, to be exact, and everyone is invited to join in.
In celebration of the impeding big One-Oh-Oh, the Paramount presents the Paramount100: A Century of Cinema film series. Starting in January, the theater will be presenting films that have helped defined the history of film over the last century. To begin with, the theater is presenting some classics of the silent film era.
Films to be screened include:
- Charlie Chaplin's The Kid
- Harold Lloyd's Safety Last
- D.W. Griffith's Intolerance
- Douglas Fairbanks in The Thief of Bagdad
These screenings and more will run through May, when their Summer Classic Film series kicks in. Badges for the event, which will give you access to all the screenings and more, can be purchased online here or you can buy them over the phone by calling (512)474-1221.
