South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse Reopening Confirmed For Summer
The popular theater, which closed for renovations in late 2012, will return this summer with a whole new style.
For movie fanatics in Austin, the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar was to go-to theater for years. Not only was it in a convenient location (unless you were trying to turn left into the parking lot from Lamar), but it had all the elements you would expect from an Austin institution - high quality equipment, zany decor, a huge beer selection and lots and lots of nostalgia. It was the annual home for the Fantastic Fest film festival as well as the AintItCoolNews.com sponsored 24-hour film festival Butt-Numb-A-Thon.
However, in late 2012, with the shopping center housing the theater (and its accompanying restaurant, The Highball) getting new ownership and a redesign, the Austin landmark has been closed, torn down and in the process of being rebuilt. While the new Drafthouse Lakeline has picked up the slack, Austinites have been eagerly anticipating the eventually reopening of the South Lamar theater.
Thankfully, according to this image posted on the official Alamo Drafthouse Austin Facebook page, we now know the wait won't be very long at all.
