South by Southwest 2014 is two months away, which means that programming news has begun to flood in. Just based on what's been announced already, this year's festival is already shaping up to be an exciting one. Let's take a look at each part of the event and see what's what.
SXSW Interactive - March 7-11
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson set to give keynote speech on March 8th.
If Stephen Hawking is, according to Dana Gould, the "Beatles of Scientists", Tyson would be, at the very least, the Rolling Stones. An alumni of the University of Texas, Tyson is a well-regarded speaker on the Universe and has even been featured on such shows as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. He will soon be hosting Fox's relaunch of the Carl Sagan program Cosmos and will also be hosting the YouTube program StarTalk for the Nerdist channel. But, first are foremost, he will be speaking to the gathered throngs of SXSWi on March 8th at 2pm for a keynote speech.
Speaking of Cosmos, we'll have more on that below...
The 1st Annual SXSW Gaming Awards
Also on March 8th, SXSWi expands on its three year old Gaming Expo with their first annual Gaming Awards, held at the Long Center at 7:30pm. Awards in 15 categories will be announced for both mainstream studio titles and independent games showcased at the festival.
SXSW Film - March 7-15
Jon Favreau's "Chef" heads up opening night films
Favreau, the director of the first two "Iron Man" films, steps away from the big studios for a change to bring us "Chef", a story about a disgraced chef who decides to enter the food truck business. (If that's not a reason to premiere it in Austin, we don't know what is.) The film stars Favreau along with Scarlett Johannsen, Robert Downey, Jr., Dustin Hoffman and more.
Other first night films include:
- "Break Point", a tennis drama about two brother staring Jeremy Sisto
- "Creep" a thriller that showcases why it's never a good idea to answer Craigslist ads
- "Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey" the premiere of Fox's new science series with Neil deGrasse Tyson (w/ Tyson himself in attendance)
- "Doc of the Dead" and "Leave the World Behind", two documentaries that explore the worlds of zombies the EDM music scene, respectively.
- and the long-awaited "Veronica Mars" film!
SXSW Music - March 11-16
SXSW Music to feature extensive live interview with Sean "Diddy" Combs
Sean Combs has gone from record producer and label owner to a successful performer in his own right. He's also branched out into fashion design, television (his network, Revolt TV, launched last year) and even acting ("Made","Get Him to the Greek"). This year, at SXSW music, he'll sit down for an extensive, exclusive interview where he will discuss his background, his career and his future plans.
