Geek Bowl Prepares To Stump Some Geeks At ACL Live This Month
The country's largest quiz event returns to Austin yet again as Geeks Who Drink present Geek Bowl
When you've turned something as traditional as the pub quiz on its head, what's left to do? If you're Geeks Who Drink, you put on America's Largest Quiz Event.
The 8th Annual Geeks Who Drink Geek Bowl comes to Austin on January 25th. Teams of six players from all over the country will converge on Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater. Ticket prices vary (whether you're competing or if you just want to watch - and trust us, it's an entertaining show even if you aren't playing) but by the end of the night $10,000 worth of cash prizes will have been given away to the winning teams.
First off, here are the actual schedule of events leading up to, and including, Geek Bowl itself:
Thursday, January 23rd - The Pre-Game
As quizmasters from all over the country fly in, you can more than expect that they'll just want to get to their hotel, kick back, watch a couple reruns of Friends and call it an early night. Ha ha! Just kidding! It's called Geeks Who DRINK, remember? While not an official event, it's been traditional for quizmasters and contestants to meet up at either The Iron Bear (121 W 8th St. and yeah, it's the kind of bar it sounds like it is) or The Nomad (1213 Corona Dr.), both at 8pm.
Friday, January 24th - Freak Bowl
The official kick-off party for Geek Bowl takes place this year at Recess Arcade Bar on W 6th St. downtown.
Now, if you haven't been to the Recess Arcade Bar, it's more or less what it sounds like - a cool bar with lots of arcade games. Providing musical entertainment is local all-girl rock cover band Guilty Pleasures, as well as appearances by a member of the 999 Eyes Freakshow and Stretcho the Clown from the Rooster Teeth Podcast.
Drink specials will be provided by Thirsty Planet Brewing Company, Fireball Whiskey and Fireball Moonshine. It's free and all attendees are encouraged to dress up - whatever your definition of "dress up" happens to be. Festivities kick off at 8pm.
Saturday, January 25th - Geek Bowl
This is the big enchilada, folks! As of press time, there are still balcony ($156/team of six) and mezzanine ($180/team of six - fixed seats and tables) seats available. Now, two things you'll want to remember. These prices remain fixed until Wednesday - after that, they'll go up 50%. Secondly, while there should be enough balcony seats available, the mezzanine seats will probably be gone by the end of the weekend, so move fast. Buy tickets online here.
You don't have to purchase team tickets to get in on the fun, however. Spectator tickets run for $20 online or $25 at the door. Every spectator is given an answer pad so they can play along with the teams, although their answers won't be scored or eligible for prizes. According to Geeks Who Drink Marketing Director John W. Smith, there are plenty of reasons this year to attend as a lookie-loo.
"Between the live music, the overall spectacle and the celebrities [on tape]," Smith told us "it's totally worth going even as a spectator." Like a typical Geeks Who Drink quiz, rounds are broken up with games, performances and other silliness, making it as much of a spectacle as it is a game.
Sunday, January 26th - Geek Bowl Hangover Brunch
While the folks who run the event discourage over-consumption of alcoholic beverages at their events, it's hard to attend something called Geeks Who Drink and not get at least a small buzz. So, once you've taken a taxi or gotten a designated driver to take you home, gotten a good night's sleep and woken up, head on over to the Iron Cactus (606 Trinity St.) for bloody marys and brunch with the quizmasters and contestants. It goes from 11am to 2pm.
