Alamo Drafthouse Finds the Holy Grail of Interactive Cinema
So follow, but only if ye be men of valor...
At the Alamo Drafthouse, talking and other forms of disruption during screenings are strictly prohibited to ensure that audiences get the most out of their moviegoing experiences.
However, once in a while, the cinema tosses the rule book out the window to host an "Action Pack" interactive screening. These crazy cinematic events encourage audience participation and include sing-along and quote-along subtitles, dancing, live games or competitions, and even audience props.
"There are some movies with dialog that's so entrenched in our culture, so ingrained in our brains, and so much a part of who we are as people that it seems just silly to make us sit and watch the film in total silence," said the Alamo Drafthouse. "Whether it's inflatable swords you can wave around with The Princess Bride or coconut shells for clomping with the "horses" in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, every Quote-Along event features something that makes it more immersive than any other screening you've been to."
Get your coconut shells ready, because the Drafthouse's next Action Pack Quote-Along will be Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a 1975 spoof of the legend where King Arthur and his trusty knights search for the elusive Holy Grail, a fabled cup or dish imbued with mystical powers to those who seek it.
Yes, this is the official 1975 trailer for the film.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail was created by a British comedy group called Monty Python's Flying Circus who commanded a BBC comedy sketch show from 1969-1974 and produced five feature-length films over the span of their careers together.
Though totally absurd, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is undeniably funny and actually contains a good deal of unexpected social commentary masked in humor. Tickets are $12 at the door and $13.25 online. Show times are as follows:
- January 16 @ 7:00pm at the Ritz
- January 22 @ 7:00pm at the Village
- January 25 @ 10:00pm at Lakeline
- January 28 @ 7:00pm at Lakeline
- January 28 @ 7:15pm at Slaughter Lane
Swords and coconut halves will be provided to each audience member. Those who prove themselves worthy may just be selected to join King Arthur on his quest to find the Holy Grail just before the screening—but you'd better be able to correctly answer those questions three, face death with its nasty, big, pointy teeth, and defeat the Vader-esque Black Knight without losing too many limbs.
And you'd better know how to say "Ni!"
